Thanjavur Netti Works is made from pith. Which is obtained from Netti, an aquatic plant called Aeschynomene Aspera. The artisans of Tamil Nadu have mastered this special craft and the art has been traditionally handed down from their ancestors. Thanjavur Netty’s works are kept in glass boxes as they are fragile. The soil of Thanjavur is suitable for growing aquatic plants used for manufacturing bone marrow artefacts. Some sample Thanjavur netti works include a model of the Brihadishwara temple, Hindu idols, door hangings, etc. With the help of Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation (Poompuhar), this art has been recognized and received the geographical indication tag.
