About Tanjore
Tanjore or Tanjavur are also called Tanjai is a city in the southern part of Tamil Nadu, India. It has a high rich in culture and heritage. It lies in the river cavery delta. The other name of Tanjavur called “Rice Bowl of India”. It is the capital of the chola dynasty ruled by the great and most powerful king Raja raja Cholan (985 to 1014ce). During his reign, he was the most powerful emperor in Indian history and is remembered for restoring the Chola influence and ensuring its supremacy across the Indian Ocean. This is an iconic figure and is often referred to as the ‘King of Kings’. In his rule, India’s southern region became united for the first time in history. Raja Raja Chola, among all the Kings in Game of Thrones, has won the hearts of his citizens and expanded his territories.
Raja Raja Chola I was also known as Arunmozhivarman and Ponniyin Selvan. He was committed to bringing advancements to his country under the guidance of his elder sister Kundhavai. An able administrator, he also constructed the greatest temple in the classical south Indian architectural style, the Rajarajeshwara Temple at the Chola capital Thanjavur. This temple is referred to as Big Temple because of its huge linga idol, huge bull statue facing the sanctum, huge precincts, and monolithic stone weighing eighty tons placed atop the tower, which are all constructed from one stone. Everything in this temple is so magnificent that it is beyond description. There is no option for stones and other materials near the dynasty. It travelled a very long distance. During his reign, the texts of the Tamil poets Appar, Sambandar and Sundarar were collected and edited into one compilation called Thirumurai, gaining him the name of ‘Thirumurai Kanda Cholar’ meaning The One Whom Found Thirumurai.
